Announcing Upgrades to Galorath’s Manufacturing Project Estimation Software, SEER® for Manufacturing
- November 10, 2009 -
El Segundo, Calif. - Galorath Incorporated, a California-based software firm whose customers include Airbus; ATK; BAE Systems; Boeing; Lockheed Martin; Northrop Grumman; Phillips Medical; Raytheon and the U.S. Department of Defense has released major upgrades to SEER for Manufacturing (SEER-MFG™, formerly SEER-DFM™), a project estimation and management solution for virtually any manufacturing operation. The new releases, SEER-MFG 6.1 and its optional component, Aerostructures 3.1, are available immediately.
SEER-MFG performs manufacturing process level estimates for part and assembly operations, enabling the use of the most cost-effective designs to reduce product costs and improve time to market. By providing insight into the cost and producibility ramifications of design decisions, SEER-MFG bridges the gap between design and manufacturing.
"Our software is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our customers," said Dan Galorath, president and CEO of Galorath Incorporated. "Manufacturing processes and technologies are continuously changing-and SEER project estimating and management applications are systematically upgraded to address these new developments."
Galorath has added numerous features and updates to the manufacturing processes contained in SEER-MFG 6.1. The software includes major updates to the primary machining models. These updates compute machine times based on feeds and speeds models. The new algorithms have been updated to be more sensitive to machining small parts as well as lightweight but difficult to machine materials, such as titanium, specifically for Radial Mill, End Mill, Turn, Bore, Shape, High Speed, Surface Grind, Chemical Mill, Centerless Grind, Cylindrical Grind, and Screw Machine processes.
The 6.1 update now produces production lots for sub assemblies and entire projects; this is extremely useful for estimating costs for delivering products over an extended period of time. With each successive lot, you can see exactly how unit and total costs reduce based on the lot quantities entered.
The Detailed Composites model has been updated with new shapes and a new parameter has been implemented, enabling users to add up to 50 additional plies per work element.
The Aerostructures 3.1 plug-in for SEER-MFG has been updated to include two new fit-up models; Cable/Harness and Tube Assembly installation. Also, the Aerostructures plug-in, whose availability was previously limited to companies inside the USA and U.S. State Department-approved firms overseas, is now widely available outside the U.S. The Aerostructures plug-in for SEER-MFG provides a direct cost model, which includes numerous composite fabrication and assembly processes for placement (Braiding, Hand Layup, P4A, Tow Placement, 3-D Weaving, Filament Winding); curing (Autoclave, E-Beam Fabrication, Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding(VARTM)); trim; paste-bond; E-Beam Assembly; 3-D Reinforcement (including Z-Pinning and Stitching); as well as some state-of-the-art metal processes such as Super Plastic Forming with Diffusion Bonding (SPFDB) and over 50 processes related to sheet metal fabrication pre-form, form, after-form and finishing operations.
"One of SEER-MFG's strengths is its ability to influence design decisions, pointing the way to the simplest and most cost-effective solution," said G. Pruijsen MSC, Manager of Value Engineering at Phillips Healthcare, headquartered in Eindhoven. "In one case a supplier offered a quote of 1,000 Euros for a part but our cost engineer, using SEER-MFG, calculated that it should be 200 Euros," said Pruijsen. "They eventually settled on a final price of 350 Euros." Pruijsen believes that over the past 12 months his cost engineers, working with SEER-MFG, have saved the division about one million Euros.
The new release of SEER-MFG includes additional improvements and new features.

Dan Galorath eWeek Interview With Leading IT Editor Available as a Podcast
- October 21, 2008 - El Segundo, Calif.— Dan Galorath, president and CEO of Galorath Incorporated, the California-based software company known for its SEER® estimation and modeling applications, was interviewed on September 29th for eWeek.com by Ziff Davis editorial director and senior vice president Michael Vizard. The program, entitled “A Failure to Learn from Past Experience,” focused on why most IT projects are late and over budget. It is available as a podcast at http://www.eweek.com/c/a/IT-Management/A-Failure-to-Learn-from-Past-Experience.
During the course of the interview, Galorath defined IT project failures as those that come in significantly over budget. Quoting a Defense Department report, he said that up to 90 percent of all projects qualify as such and blamed overconfidence in vendors, an abundance of optimism and the tendency of IT to accept unrealistic projections from corporate managers. Estimating capabilities, he said, can be obtained for under $20,000-with the investment often recouped after the very first project. The lesson being that parametric modeling doesn't just help companies choose the appropriate project and the right vendor, it can help decide which projects are unfeasible and should not be attempted at all.
In a discussion of outsourcing, Galorath pointed out that applications like SEER for IT and SEER for Software (SEER-SEMTM) can transform managers into better educated consumers. By modeling a project beforehand, they can obtain a more accurate picture of its size and complexity, he said, avoiding overbilling practices such as double-charging for changes already factored into the original estimate. He pointed out that the failure to apply sound management practices can result in unwarranted optimism and unrealistic expectations. The key, he said, is the willingness to apply the lessons of past failures to new projects.

SEER for IT Estimation Software From Galorath: An Answer to Project Delays and Cost Overruns
- July 02, 2008 - El Segundo, Calif.—SEER for IT, a new knowledge-based project estimation and management solution from Galorath Incorporated, promises IT managers better control of costs and planning for IT projects and the ongoing support and maintenance of IT infrastructure and services. By accurately forecasting required effort, schedule and risk before work is even begun, SEER-IT can enable CIOs to significantly improve their IT project success rates. Galorath, whose clients include Bank of America, the Ford Motor Company, the IRS and Northrop Grumman, is a software and consulting firm known for products such as SEER for Software, SEER for Manufacturing and SEER for Hardware, Electronics and Systems.
"We envisioned SEER for IT as a response to new compliance regulations, tighter budgets and calls by senior IT managers for help in running their departments more like a business," said Dan Galorath, founder and CEO of Galorath Inc. "CIOs tell us that inaccurate estimates account for almost all IT project cost overruns and delays and the larger the project the more likely it is to be late and exceed budget-SEER for IT aims to change all that."
"SEER for IT fills a great need for applications that can accurately estimate IT operations projects," said Michael D.S. Harris, co-author of The Business Value of IT: Managing Risks, Optimizing Performance and Measuring Results. "The tight integration between SEER for IT and SEER for Software provides a powerful one-two punch for enhancing end-to-end estimating capabilities."
SEER for IT replicates real-world scenarios and outcomes by combining sophisticated cost modeling technology with an easy-to-use interface; databases of industry and user inputs, rates and factors; and a parametric estimation engine. Designed to bring best practices to the planning and estimation of IT projects and IT support, it can be configured to an organization's unique environment and offers a consistent and repeatable process that supports both detailed and high-level project estimates and trade-offs. The results can be shared easily throughout the organization.
SEER for IT also accurately gauges virtually all aspects of projects needed to support major IT initiatives, including "should cost" models for use in evaluating outsourced estimates. Over the years, SEER estimates have proven to be on target within a range of plus or minus five percent on even the most complex technology projects.

SEER for Software from Galorath: Setting the Standard for 20 Years
- April 28, 2008 - El Segundo, Calif.--The year 1988 is recent history but in software terms it is akin to the early Industrial Revolution-a time when Commodore 64 software sales were still in the tens of millions of dollars, Americans spent over $2.2 billion on MS-DOS-based applications and Lotus 1-2-3 had a 68 percent market share. Also during that year, but with much less public fanfare, Galorath Incorporated launched its SEER-SEM (Software Estimation Model) and found early adapters in the United States Air Force, the National Security Agency, GTE, and Lockheed. But while Commodore, MS-DOS and Lotus have all either declined or disappeared, SEER-SEM (now called SEER for Software) has, not only remained robust with thousands of additional users, but over 20 years has retained each one of its original customers.
"The reason for the outstanding longevity of our customer relationships is not brand loyalty but innovation, pure and simple," said Dan Galorath, president and CEO of Galorath Incorporated. "SEER for Software has had 16 major version enhancements since 1988. We learned early on that listening to customers and understanding what they liked-and didn't like-about our product, was the key to producing the industry's best software."
SEER for Software-then and now-is an application that helps organizations plan, analyze and manage complex software development projects. In its earliest incarnation as one of the first such applications to be Microsoft Windows-based, it comprised 13 5-1/4 inch floppy discs containing 30,000 lines of code (today, Version 7.2 weighs in at 200,000). In addition to the aforementioned longtime customers, SEER for Software users include BAE Systems, Bank of America, Ford Motor Company, ITT Space Systems, several divisions of Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and the Social Security Administration.
SEER for Software, like all SEER solutions, features an intuitive interface for defining and describing projects; a simulation/modeling engine; knowledge bases that provide definitions, values, ranges and calibrations based on comparable project histories; a variety of charts, graphs and reports for quickly summarizing and presenting project outcomes and alternatives; and open architecture and APIs that ensure the data's easy integration with departmental productivity solutions and enterprise applications.

Galorath’s New Microsoft Project Integration Simplifies Hardware Development Planning
- April 17, 2008 - El Segundo, Calif.--A new Microsoft Project integration with the SEER for Hardware, Electronics and Systems (formerly SEER-H) suite of lifecycle cost estimating applications from Galorath, works as a powerful tool for estimating and planning projects by transforming SEER cost and schedule estimates into detailed, task-oriented plans in Microsoft Project. Galorath, whose clients include Boeing; Ford Motor Company; Lockheed Martin; NASA, and the U.S. Air Force, is a provider of advanced modeling tools for project estimation, planning and control.
With relatively few inputs, SEER anticipates and helps accurately plan every aspect of the product life cycle including development, production, operations and support. By transforming project estimates into Microsoft Project plans, it enables the definition of customized templates that are specific to an organization's processes, thus ensuring project plans adhere to organizational standards and practices.
In a simple four-step process, SEER users select an existing project, a planning scheme (a collection of processes, each specific to the type of SEER element being transformed) and a resource assignment scheme. The assignment scheme determines the appropriate labor categories for SEER effort estimates (custom resource assignments can be created). After users specify their inputs, the plan is seamlessly ported to Microsoft Project.
Plans can include development, acquisition, production, O&S, and system level costs. Extent of detail can vary from high level phases to detailed tasks and milestones.
The SEER for Hardware, Electronics and Systems Microsoft Project integration is now available as part of the SEER suite of project estimating and planning tools. Galorath Selected by HITCO to Provide Estimating Software
El Segundo, CA - November 13, 2007 - In need of a faster and more accurate way to prepare project proposals, HITCO Carbon Composites (www.hitco.com) has selected SEER for Manufacturing (SEER MFG) and SEER for Hardware, Electronics & Systems (SEER HW) from Galorath Incorporated, a pioneer and industry leader in project estimation and management solutions. The company will use Galorath's project modeling application with extended capabilities designed specifically for the composites manufacturing industry. Galorath customers include Alcoa, Northrop Grumman, Honeywell, NASA, Boeing, the Social Security Administration and the Ford Motor Company.
According to Linda Dooley, HITCO's contracts manager, the company prepared an average of 12 proposals a month last year and has expanded its estimating department to keep up. "We believe the SEER tools will help handle this increased volume," she said. "Time and accuracy are critical factors in submitting a bid; missing a due date is often viewed as non-responsive which excludes the bidder from consideration. Alternatively, winning a bid you have underestimated can be problematic."
Two other sources were evaluated before selecting SEER by Galorath. One of the deciding factors was SEER's effectiveness during trials. "SEER significantly reduced the bid-cycle time," said Dooley. Another was Galorath's emphasis on service. "Galorath has been very responsive to questions, suggestions, needs and blue-sky expectations. They are very patient representatives who not only listen, but hear what we are saying and make suggestions for resolutions to a problem."
"HITCO's early experience with SEER solutions shows that small to mid-size organizations can quickly achieve bottom-line benefits from estimation software," said Galorath vice president Brian Glauser.
Unlike most project tools which focus primarily on modeling functionality and workflow, Galorath has focused on delivering a family of tools designed to model and analyze project costs, effort, and duration, and to help organizations ensure that their development targets are achieved. SEER solutions equip organizations with the tools and information needed to assess project feasibility, optimize project resources, monitor and adjust project processes, and improve the accuracy of project estimates over time.
SEER for Hardware, Electronics & Systems provides detailed insight into the cost drivers, effort and risk involved in hardware development, acquisition and integration. SEER MFG with Aerostructures Pro provides a direct-cost model focused on manufacturing processes, including over 25 existing and emerging composite fabrication and assembly processes. As a result, engineers can reduce costs by performing an increased number of trade studies in a shorter period of time. Last year, at the Final Technical Review for CAI (Composites Affordability Initiative), SEER Aerostructures Pro was acknowledged as one of the three most significant technology transitions that occurred as a result of the program since its inception in 1996.

Dan Galorath’s Dramatic Weight Loss Featured in The Wall Street Journal: Like His Company, a Story Told in Numbers
El Segundo, CA - April 10, 2007 - The April 10th edition of The Wall Street Journal Online featured the inspiring story of SEER technology architect and CEO, Dan Galorath, and how he achieved a dramatic and health-restoring weight loss. The article included “before and after” photos that illustrate his remarkable transformation into a fit and slim software executive. As founder of Galorath Incorporated, a software and consulting company specializing in project estimation, planning, and control, Galorath’s life is all about numbers: How long will a project take? How much will it cost? What factors will have the greatest impact on scheduled delivery dates? In the WSJ article, Galorath recounted his experience with numbers of a more personal nature.
As related to WSJ reporter, Jen Murphy, Galorath weighed 264 pounds in April of 2006 and lacked the energy needed to run a growing company and address the needs of large customers like Bank of America, Boeing, IBM Global Services, Lockheed Martin and NASA. A logician by training, Galorath recognized that his problems stemmed from lack of exercise and poor eating habits. Researching various weight loss and fitness approaches, Galorath decided to enter the University of California’s Risk Factor Obesity Program which boasts an extraordinary success rate: 85 percent of UCLA patients achieve their desired weight and 60 percent maintain this weight loss for three years or longer.
Soon Galorath’s attention was re-directed from unhealthy numbers such as 1200-calorie breakfast burritos to healthy numbers such as “good” calories, minutes of exercise, percentage of body fat, and the most important number of all: 80—the number of pounds he lost in the program.
Galorath acknowledges that the first few days tested his resolve. Surviving on only 1,000 calories a day in powdered drinks and supplements was tough. In less than a week, however, Galorath had adjusted to the reduced intake and was soon ready to undertake an increasingly challenging exercise program.
The numbers are convincing. In the first week Galorath lost 13 pounds. After that he steadily shed about 3½ pounds a week. Today, Galorath maintains a healthy weight of 190 pounds, as well as a healthy lifestyle which includes cardio-healthy biking and walking, weight training, and a sensible diet consisting of seafood, soy burgers, fruits and vegetables. His muscle mass has increased substantially and he has more energy for both work and family.
By publishing his diet and exercise regimen in the WSJ article, Galorath hopes his experience will inspire others to change to a healthier lifestyle. “I'm not a dumb guy, but I just never understood the consequences of eating and exercise,” he told The Journal. “But when you turn it into numbers and put it in a formula you realize you are in control of your weight.”
