Forget the Notebook: The Cost of Netbooks
I spoke with a CIO today of a major organization. They are beginning to deploy netbooks rather than notebooks. I have to agree, I have been using an ASUS 100he as my portable computer for the past month or so. I paid $375, less then the cost of the extended warranty on my Dell notebook.
I used to carry a 7+ pound Dell plus power supply + an 11 pound rolling bag to protect and carry the whole mess. By the time I was done the bag weighed 25 pounds and didn’t fit in our UK employees’ cars or qualify as a carry-on on inter-Europe flights. And the cost was about $2,000.
Now I carry the 3 pound Netbook (with a 160gig drive, Windows XP, and 2 gigs RAM) in a 2 pound bag. Throw in a few protein bars, a small windbreaker, iPod, etc. and the whole thing weighs 6+ pounds. No more rolling bag. No more 90 watt power supply.
I think this is going to become a game changer for notebook computers and notebook computer costs.
It seems to do everything right. I run our SEER applications, Office 2007, Skype to call home when outside the US. Even the touch-pad is the best I have ever used.
I even got one for one of my sons, who is majoring in computer science, to replace his broken Dell. He is the envy of the entire department.
I sometimes wish it had more resolution… when I am creating new graphical content. But it is fast enough, the screen is big enough. It works great with a projector. And even has a built-in web cam. It works fine with Webex for presentations. Oh.. did I mention it runs 9 hours on battery.
Vendors are still trying to cast these as only good for browsing and email. They are so far from right. I believe we will see the cost of notebooks plummet industry-wide based on the cannibalization of netbooks.
PS: If it breaks or is lost that is a shame. But the answer it just go buy another one. No need to call Dell for warranty repair.
