Weight Management = Measurement and Estimation

October 14, 2008 · Filed Under General  - 2 Comment(s)

Weight management is all about measurement and estimation.  Estimating quantity of food, measuring when possible, measuring calories burned during exercise. Simple arithmetic:  3500 calories in a pound of fat.  Eat more than your should and the pounds of fat increase, etc.  The average person burns about 10 calories per pound per day just to stay alive.  Of course during the UCLA program data is collected and this is calibrated to the individual.

I realize this may seem out of context… I am amazed at how many people ask me for this Wall Street Journal article on my weight loss  It has been nearly 3 years since I lost all the weight. And two years since this article.  Today I am much leaner (19% body fat.. less than an average high school athlete) and much bigger (+ 3.5 inches in biceps, +5 inches chest, +6 inches shoulders) than when the weight loss was complete.  I thank UCLA for their program regularly.

I am 360 pounds and want to burn my calories. Can you suggest me ways to burn calories. Loss of 10 calories per pound just by living is not enough for anyone and for an obese like me more calories has to be lost. I will be looking forward for your reply.

    Here is what I do….

    1. Nordic walking… Using nordic poles when walking burns something like 28% more calories than walking alone.. When was obese I nordic walked on flat paths. Now up and down hills & mountains with poles… Burned nearly 6,000 calories recently using poles up the trans catalina trail.
    2. Weight lifting… I burn about 350-500 calories each session of heavy weight lifting… Generally 8 reps to exhaustion, 3 sets each exercise
    3. Spinning cycling classes… Good for 400-600 calories per session..
    4. Martial arts… Good for about 400 calories per session. http://Www.elitetrainingcenter.net
    5. Intervals… As hard as you can. For 30 seconds, then easy for 90 seconds, repeat about 6 times…. Can do with cycling, running, walking.

Note you will burn more calories at your weight than I do.

Also log your calories… Exercise can make you more hungry.. Don’t eat back the extra calories..
